Southern Lakes Tartan
Inspired by the natural beauty of New Zealand’s Central Otago region, Southern Lakes Tartan is a testament to Shona Johnstone’s passion for the area, her family and her craft.
“Surrounded by such beauty, I was inspired to do something creative for my family. As a long-time weaver with a loom and some time, I embarked on a fun project with the colours of the Southern Lakes District. I finally settled on a design which was, for me, an expression of the area’s beauty. The majestic mountains with snow-capped peaks, the golden tussocks, and the soft blue waters of the lakes were truly inspirational. And so I created a special tartan for my family.
The rest is history; with some persuasion, and approval from Scotland, Shona had her tartan registered as the official Southern Lakes Tartan. Creating not only a gift for her family, but a gift for the region.
In July, 2019 Shona passed away peacefully at the ripe old age of 93. Her daughter Hilary continues to share the Southern Lakes Tartan for all to enjoy.
